Pirate Hearts Burn With Rum and Reckoning

Pirate romances, Valentine treasure, and the death of Black Bart. Issue #42 – Feb 13th, 2026

Ahoy, Matey

Pirates are remembered for treasure, battles, and black flags — but even the most feared captains weren’t immune to love.

This Valentine’s week, we’re looking at the romances that shaped pirate legend — and the risks pirates took for something more valuable than gold. Love is in the air, in the sea and in the hearts of many pirates. Welcome to episode 42, me hearties.

🏴‍☠️ This Week in Pirate History — February 10, 1722

Before We Get All Mushy — The Fall of Black Bart: Bartholomew Roberts

On February 10, 1722, one of history’s most successful pirates fell in an instant.

Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts, the most feared pirate of the late Golden Age, was killed during a naval battle off Cape Lopez, West Africa, when the British warship HMS Swallow finally caught up with him.

Roberts had captured hundreds of ships during his short but explosive pirate career — more than Blackbeard, Kidd, or Bonny and Rackham combined. He commanded a disciplined pirate fleet, enforced a strict pirate code, and dressed like a naval officer in a crimson coat and feathered hat, making him unmistakable in battle.

But the end came quickly.

As Roberts stood on deck directing the fight, grapeshot from the British ship struck him in the throat, killing him almost instantly. According to pirate accounts, his crew honored his final request — they wrapped his body in sailcloth and buried him at sea before the British could claim it.

Without Roberts, resistance collapsed within hours. His crew surrendered, and dozens of pirates were later tried and executed, marking one of the decisive blows that ended the Golden Age of Piracy.

Roberts died exactly as he lived —
boldly, visibly, and at the center of battle.

❤️ Love, Rum, and Gunpowder — Pirate Romance Stories

Pirates lived fast, fought often, and rarely planned for tomorrow — but love still found its way aboard ship.

Some pirate romances were loyal.
Some were tragic.
And some ended with a blade drawn in jealousy.

Valentine’s Day on the high seas wasn’t about roses — it was about devotion strong enough to risk the gallows.

Anne Bonny & Calico Jack Rackham

Perhaps the most famous pirate couple, Anne Bonny and Calico Jack Rackham sailed together as partners in love and piracy.

Bonny left her husband to join Rackham’s crew, where she fought alongside Mary Read. Their relationship became legend after their capture in Jamaica in 1720.

Rackham was executed.
Bonny survived — and disappeared into history.

Love, it seems, did not always share the same fate.

Samuel Bellamy & Maria Hallett

The most romantic pirate story may belong to Samuel Bellamy, known as the Prince of Pirates.

According to legend, Bellamy turned to piracy to win the hand of Maria Hallett, promising to return rich enough to marry her.

He never did.

In 1717, Bellamy’s ship Whydah Gally sank in a storm off Cape Cod, ending both his pirate career and his chance at love.

Some stories say Maria waited for him for years.

Blackbeard’s Many Wives

Even the most feared pirate in history had a complicated love life.

Blackbeard was rumored to have had as many as fourteen wives, including a documented marriage in Bath, North Carolina while living briefly under a royal pardon.

For a moment, the terror of the Caribbean lived like a respectable citizen.

It didn’t last.

Within a year, Blackbeard returned to piracy — and soon after, to his death in battle.

Black Caesar — Love and Violence

Pirate legend says Black Caesar, one of the earliest Black pirates of the Caribbean, killed a rival pirate over a woman.

The story varies depending on the source, but the theme remains the same:
even among pirates, jealousy could be deadlier than cannon fire.

Whether fully true or not, the tale reflects something real about pirate life — emotions ran hot, loyalties were fragile, and love could be as dangerous as mutiny.

Love on the Edge of the Map

Pirate stories often focus on treasure and battles, but these romances remind us that pirates were still human.

They fell in love.
They made promises.
They lost everything.

Sometimes to the sea.
Sometimes to the law.
And sometimes to each other.
