📜 THIS WEEK IN PIRATE HISTORY

A Thousand Gold Coins Couldn't Buy His Freedom

On July 30, 1696, John Dann, the coxswain who had sailed with Henry Every, thought he'd escaped the greatest manhunt in the world.

After Every and his crew seized the legendary Mughal treasure ship Ganj-i-Sawai in 1695, England launched an international search for the pirates. While Every himself vanished into legend, many of his crew weren't so fortunate.

Dann had made his way to the Bull Hotel in Rochester, Kent, carrying a small fortune—1,000 gold coins carefully sewn inside his waistcoat. He may have believed the money would help him disappear quietly into a new life.

Instead, a chambermaid discovered the hidden stash while handling his clothing. Realizing something was terribly suspicious, she alerted the town's mayor, who had Dann arrested on charges of piracy. She even collected the reward for turning him in.

John Dann would eventually stand trial alongside other members of Every's crew. Unlike some of his shipmates, he was fortunate enough to receive a royal pardon years later, but on this day his luck had finally run out.

Pirates often feared naval warships, rival captains, and the gallows. John Dann was brought down by something much simpler—a hidden pocket full of gold and an observant chambermaid.

It's a reminder that many pirates weren't captured in dramatic sea battles. More often, they were caught trying to spend the treasure they'd worked so hard to steal.

The Queen's Pirate Takes on the Spanish Armada

On July 31, 1588, the waters off Plymouth became the stage for one of history's greatest naval showdowns. Standing ready to meet the mighty Spanish Armada was Sir Francis Drake—a man celebrated as a hero by England and cursed as a pirate by Spain.

To Queen Elizabeth I, Drake was her trusted privateer, explorer, and naval commander. To King Philip II and every Spanish captain who crossed his path, he was simply "El Draque"—the Dragon—a pirate who had spent years raiding ports, capturing treasure ships, and humiliating the Spanish Empire.

The truth? Both sides had a point.

Armed with a letter of marque, Drake sailed with the Crown's blessing to attack England's enemies and keep a share of the plunder. To the English, that made him a patriot. To everyone else, it looked an awful lot like legalized piracy.

When the Armada finally arrived to invade England, Drake put those years of hard-earned experience to work. Serving as second-in-command of the English fleet, he helped harass the Spanish formation, capture valuable intelligence, and drive the once-invincible Armada toward one of history's greatest naval disasters.

History has always played favorites.

Give a pirate a royal commission and he's remembered as a knight.

Take away that piece of parchment, and he's remembered as an outlaw.

The only thing separating Sir Francis Drake from Blackbeard may have been whose flag flew above the quarterdeck.

The Rise and Fall of Robert Culliford

On August 1, 1700, one of the Indian Ocean's most feared pirates found himself trading the quarterdeck for a prison cell. Robert Culliford was arrested and committed to London's infamous Marshalsea Prison, bringing an abrupt end to a career built on plunder, mutiny, and fortune.

For years, Culliford had terrorized merchant shipping across the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, amassing treasure and followers until his name carried real weight among pirate crews. His reputation grew so formidable that when Captain William Kidd anchored at Madagascar hoping to recruit men, many of Kidd's own crew deserted him, choosing instead to sail beneath Culliford's black flag. That single act of mutiny helped seal Kidd's fate and altered the course of pirate history.

But the tide had turned.

In the wake of Henry Every's infamous raid on the Ganj-i-Sawai, England was under immense pressure to stamp out piracy in the Indian Ocean. The Crown needed arrests, convictions, and examples. When Culliford finally returned to England, he sailed not into glory, but into the waiting hands of the law.

Unlike many of his fellow pirates, however, Culliford escaped the hangman's noose. By cooperating with authorities and testifying against other buccaneers, he managed to bargain for his own life—a rare ending in an age when piracy usually ended with a rope around the neck.

The sea can make a man rich, famous... and feared.

But pirate fortunes could change as quickly as the wind.

One year Robert Culliford commanded a fleet of hardened buccaneers across the Indian Ocean. A few years later, he was sitting behind prison walls, buying his freedom not with gold or cannon fire, but with his testimony.

In the Golden Age of Piracy, today's legendary captain could become tomorrow's King's witness. 🏴‍☠️

Last weekend I had the honor of moderating "From Blackbeard to Netflix: Pirates in Modern Media" at San Diego Comic-Con, and the response was more than I ever imagined. The ballroom filled to capacity, while hundreds of would-be buccaneers were left waiting outside after every seat had been claimed.

Dr. Rebecca Simon masterfully separated pirate myth from reality while reminding us why these rogues continue to capture our imagination centuries later.

Zach McGowan, the unforgettable Charles Vane from Black Sails, shared behind-the-scenes stories about bringing one of history's fiercest pirates to life.

Lukas Ettlin, director of episodes from both Black Sails and Netflix's One Piece, gave us an inside look at how today's pirate adventures are crafted for audiences around the world.

And Dr. Mark Hanna, author of Pirate Nests and the Rise of the British Empire, tied it all together with the kind of historical insights that make you realize the real Golden Age was often even stranger than fiction.
