Think Piracy Is Dead? Think Again...

A real attack, a shipwreck stay, and pirates in LA this weekend... Issue #51 – March 17th, 2026

Ahoy, Matey

The winds are shifting…

And this week, the voyage takes us far beyond the pages of history.

From Renaissance fairs in the hills of Tennessee…
To a full-scale pirate gathering in the desert…
To the dangerous waters off Somalia where piracy still thrives…

And for the first time in a long while—

The Captain goes ashore.

If you’re in Los Angeles this weekend, you might just cross paths with the crew in the flesh.

But more on that soon…

Let’s chart the course.

Welcome to Episode 51 of The Pirate Republic.

🏴‍☠️ This Week in Pirate History

⚔️ April 18, 1721 – Thomas Anstis Slips the Noose of Black Bart

Not all pirate battles were fought with cannon fire.

Some were won in silence.

On April 18, 1721, Thomas Anstis made a decision that could’ve cost him everything:

He broke away from the most powerful pirate captain of the age—Bartholomew Roberts.

🏴‍☠️ The Setup

At the time, Roberts commanded a growing pirate fleet, dominating the Atlantic with discipline, aggression, and strict control.

Anstis served under him—but not comfortably.

Roberts ran his ships like a machine:

  • Rules enforced

  • Authority unquestioned

  • Loyalty expected

For some pirates, that was strength.

For others… it was a cage.

🌙 The Escape

Under cover of darkness, Anstis made his move.

No grand mutiny.
No clash of steel.

Just quiet rebellion.

He and his crew slipped away in their ship—vanishing into the night while Roberts’ fleet remained unaware.

It was a dangerous gamble.

Because if Roberts had caught them?

There would’ve been no forgiveness.

⚔️ What Came After

Anstis didn’t just run.

He became a pirate captain in his own right.

Operating in the Caribbean, he:

  • Captured ships

  • Built his own crew

  • Carved out a short—but notable—career

But fate wasn’t on his side.

Within a few years, Anstis was captured.

And like many who sailed under the black flag…

He met the hangman’s rope.

⚓ Final Word

In the Golden Age of Piracy, survival wasn’t just about fighting the enemy.

Sometimes…

It meant knowing when to disappear.

PIRATE TRAVEL PICK – SLEEP IN A SHIPWRECK

🏴‍☠️ The Shipwreck Airbnb

Some places you visit…

And some places you step into a story.

This might be the closest thing to waking up inside a pirate legend.

Perched right on the water’s edge, this one-of-a-kind Airbnb looks less like a house… and more like a shipwreck that refused to sink.

Crooked decks.
Weathered wood.
Lantern light flickering across the water.

It feels like it drifted in from another century—and decided to stay.

What Makes It Special

  • 🌊 Built directly over the water—waves lapping beneath you

  • 🏴‍☠️ Multi-level decks that feel like a grounded galleon

  • 🔥 Warm lantern-style lighting that transforms it at night

  • 🌅 A view that turns every sunset into a scene from a pirate film

From the outside, it’s chaos.

From the inside… it’s surprisingly welcoming.

⚔️ The Experience

Imagine this:

You step out onto the deck as the sun drops behind the hills.

The water moves beneath you.
The lights glow like fire through the windows.
The whole structure creaks just enough to feel alive.

For a moment…

You’re not in an Airbnb.

You’re in the aftermath of a storm.

A ship that ran aground…
A crew long gone…
And somehow—you’ve claimed it.

🏴‍☠️ Worth the Voyage?

If you’re the kind of Pirate Republic reader who:

  • Loves immersive, story-driven places

  • Wants something way beyond a standard getaway

  • Or just wants to live like a castaway captain for a few nights…

This one’s worth adding to your map.

⚠️ MODERN PIRACY REPORT – THE WATERS ARE STILL DANGEROUS

🌊 Gulf of Aden – February 26, 2026

Think piracy is buried in the past?

Think again.

Just weeks ago, off the coast of Somalia near the Gulf of Aden—one of the most notorious shipping lanes in the world—another attack unfolded.

According to international maritime reports:

  • 🚤 Two pirate skiffs approached a vessel underway

  • ⚔️ An attempted boarding was launched

  • 🛡️ The crew activated defensive countermeasures

  • 💥 The attack was repelled before pirates could gain control

But this wasn’t without consequence.

One suspected pirate was killed.
Two others were injured.

And just like that…

The encounter ended.

⚔️ Same Game, Different Century

The weapons may be modern.

The ships may be steel giants.

But the tactics?

They haven’t changed much in 300 years.

  • Small, fast boats

  • Surprise approach

  • Close-quarters boarding attempts

Sound familiar?

It should.

🧭 Why This Still Matters

The Gulf of Aden remains one of the most critical and dangerous maritime corridors on Earth.

Thousands of vessels pass through it every year—carrying everything from oil to global trade goods.

And where there’s wealth moving across open water…

There will always be those willing to take it.

The Golden Age of Piracy may be long gone.

But the spirit of it?

Still lives on the waves.

Only now…

The stakes are global.

🏴‍☠️ CAPTAIN BLACKQUILL’S LOG

The world hasn’t changed as much as people think.

There are still ships crossing dangerous waters.
Still treasure moving unseen.
Still those willing to risk everything to take it.

And there are still stories worth chasing.

From history books to modern headlines…

Piracy lives on.
