With a quiet mutiny in the dead of night.

From Henry Every’s daring escape…
To the pirate havens that sheltered legends…
To gifts worthy of the pirate queens among us—

The black flag rises once more.

Let’s set sail.

Welcome to Episode 54 of The Pirate Republic.

📜 THIS WEEK IN PIRATE HISTORY

⚔️ May 7, 1694 – Henry Every Steals a Ship… and Changes History

Some pirate legends begin with battle.

This one began… with a whisper in the dark.

On the night of May 7, 1694, at around 9:00 p.m., Henry Every and roughly twenty-five men made their move aboard the ship Charles II.

No cannons.

No chaos.

Just a quiet approach… and a password.

“Is the drunken boatswain on board?”

Moments later, they were on deck.

🌙 The Bloodless Mutiny

Captain Gibson lay bedridden.

The crew was caught completely off guard.

And just like that—

The ship was taken.

No blood spilled.
No resistance worth noting.

It was one of the cleanest mutinies in pirate history.

⚔️ A Narrow Escape

But not everyone stayed loyal.

Another ship in the expedition—James—realized what was happening.

Its captain called out a warning.

Then fired.

The shot alerted the Spanish night watch.

And suddenly, Every’s quiet takeover turned into a race for survival.

He didn’t hesitate.

He cut loose… and ran for open sea.

Vanishing into the night.

🏴‍☠️ The Birth of a Pirate

Once safely away, Every made a move that defined him.

He gave the remaining crew a choice:

Join him… or leave.

Even Captain Gibson was offered a place among them.

When he refused, Every set him ashore—with respect, provisions, and his life.

No cruelty.
No revenge.

Just a clean break.

Then came the transformation:

  • Charles II was renamed Fancy

  • The crew voted Every as captain

  • Shares of treasure were agreed upon

  • And a new course was set…

 The Indian Ocean

💰 The Pitch

Every didn’t just take a ship.

He sold a dream.

He pointed to the success of Thomas Tew—who had struck enormous wealth in the Red Sea just a year prior.

Fortune was out there.

And they were going to take it.

📜 The Pirate Code of Henry Every

Soon after, Every issued a message to English ships:

“I have never as yet wronged any English or Dutch… nor ever intend…
but my men are hungry, stout, and resolute.”

He called himself:

“An Englishman’s friend.”

A pirate…

But one who chose his targets carefully.

⚓ Final Word

That night didn’t just create a mutiny.

It created a legend.

From a stolen ship in the dark…
To the richest pirate prize in history…

Henry Every didn’t rise slowly.

He disappeared into the horizon—

And came back as a myth.

🗺️ PIRATE HAVENS OF THE GOLDEN AGE

⚓ The Ports That Fed the Pirate World

Pirates didn’t just live at sea.

They needed places to:

  • Repair ships

  • Spend gold

  • Recruit crews

  • And disappear when things got dangerous

These were the ports where the black flag flew freely.

🏴‍☠️ Nassau (Bahamas)

👉 Nassau

The most famous pirate haven of them all.

After falling into neglect, Nassau became a lawless stronghold in the early 1700s—home to:

  • Blackbeard

  • Charles Vane

  • Calico Jack

No real government.
No enforcement.

Just pirates… running their own republic.

Port Royal (Jamaica)

👉 Port Royal

Before Nassau—there was Port Royal.

Known as the “wickedest city on Earth,” it was packed with:

  • Taverns

  • Brothels

  • Merchants happy to deal with pirates

It thrived on privateering… until a devastating earthquake in 1692 sank much of it into the sea.

🏝️ Île Sainte-Marie (Madagascar)

👉 Île Sainte-Marie

The gateway to the Indian Ocean treasure routes.

This is where pirates like:

  • Henry Every

  • Thomas Tew

Stopped to resupply before hunting Mughal treasure fleets.

Remote.
Strategic.
Perfect for disappearing.

⚔️ Tortuga (Caribbean)

👉 Tortuga

A stronghold of the earlier buccaneers.

Rocky, defensible, and difficult to attack—Tortuga became a pirate base where:

  • Crews launched raids on Spanish ships

  • Alliances were formed

  • Fortunes were made

It set the template for pirate havens that followed.

🧭 New Providence / The Pirate Republic

👉 New Providence

Often grouped with Nassau—but worth calling out.

This entire island became a pirate-controlled zone, not just a port.

It wasn’t just a haven.

It was a pirate state.

Anjouan (Comoros Islands)

👉 Anjouan

A lesser-known but critical stop in the Indian Ocean.

Pirates used it to:

  • Trade

  • Rest

  • Gather intelligence

Henry Every himself wrote letters from here.

⚔️ WHY THESE HAVENS MATTERED

Without these ports…

Piracy wouldn’t have survived.

They were:

  • Supply chains

  • Black markets

  • Safe zones beyond empire control

Cut off the havens—

And piracy begins to collapse.

(Which is exactly what Woodes Rogers set out to do.)

💰🏴‍☠️ PIRATE MOTHER’S DAY PLUNDER PICK

For pirate-loving moms, the best gifts aren’t ordinary—they should feel atmospheric, adventurous, and just a little dangerous. The right candle should evoke rum-soaked taverns, oak barrels, stormy nights, and a captain’s cabin lit by lantern glow.

This feels less like a candle… and more like stepping below deck aboard a pirate ship.

The scent profile is pure Pirate Republic:

  • 🏴‍☠️ Sweet oak-barrel rum

  • ☕ Hints of coffee

  • 🌑 Patchouli and orange blossom drifting through the air

Northern Lights describes it as an homage to craft cocktails, poured in frosted glass with a natural cork lid. It burns around 35 hours and is poured in the USA.

⚔️ Why This Makes a Great Pirate Mother’s Day Gift

  • 🌊 Feels immersive and nautical without being cheesy

  • 🕯️ Creates instant pirate tavern / captain’s quarters atmosphere

  • 🎁 Easy gift for:

    • Pirate moms

    • Renaissance Faire fans

    • Readers of pirate fiction

    • Anyone who loves dark, warm fragrances

And honestly…

The phrase “Dark Rum & Oak” already sounds like something ordered in Nassau under the black flag.

🌸🏴‍☠️ PIRATE EVENT – A MOTHER’S DAY ADVENTURE

This Mother’s Day…

Skip the brunch.

Take her somewhere unexpected.

The Royal Stagg Pirate Faire is bringing a full weekend of adventure, mischief, and high-seas spirit—just in time for spring.

🌸 A Different Kind of Celebration

Not every Mother’s Day needs:

  • Crowded restaurants

  • Waiting lists

  • And the same old routine

Sometimes…

It calls for pirates.

⚔️ What Awaits

Step into a world where:

  • 🏴‍☠️ Pirates roam freely among the crowd

  • 🎶 Live music and performances fill the air

  • 🛍️ Artisan vendors offer treasures and curiosities

  • 🍗 Food, drink, and revelry flow all day long

And the best part?

It’s built for everyone—families, adventurers, and anyone ready to trade tradition for something memorable.

🧭 Pirate Republic Take

Let’s be honest—

A pirate festival might be the most underrated Mother’s Day move out there.

Because instead of:
“Thanks for the flowers…”

You’re giving:

👉 A full day of experience
👉 A story she’ll remember
👉 And maybe even a new pirate recruit

☠️ Captain’s Log

Every pirate needed something:

A ship.
A crew.
A hidden port where the law couldn’t reach them.

And maybe…

A little luck beneath the black flag.

So wherever your course takes you this week—

Raise a glass to the rogues, rebels, and dreamers who vanished beyond the horizon…

And became legends.

Fair winds,
Captain Blackquill
